R. Douglas Therrell of North Carolina is a lifelong entrepreneur and educator, having founded several real estate, insurance, and educational companies. Born in 1940, Therrell continues his hard work to this day, maintaining his position as a member of multiple boards and advisory councils.
One of his most notable accomplishments occurred in the year 2000, when he founded the Therrell Farms development project. Therrell Farms is an upscale NC community which resides partially on land that has been in his family for years. The project is one of many real estate ventures Doug has either founded or been a part of. As a young man, he purchased his first tract of undeveloped land as a vocational investment in 1966.
Therrell also enjoyed a storied career in the insurance field, having first taken a job in 1971 with Travelers Insurance, where he was responsible for marketing a variety of products including casualty property, surety, securities, life and health insurance. In 1974, he founded his own independent agency and sold insurance products nationally in forty states.
The FSU Graduate studied music and voice performance in college and even performed a recital at Carnegie Hall in 1965. He began is career as a voice instructor at Mars Hill College in 1963, later becoming their Director of Opera. At age 26, he became the college’s youngest tenured professor.
